Hear a novel with one flat voice and every conversation blurs together. Turn on character voices and you hear who speaks.
Turn it on
- In the reader, tap the voice button at the top.
- Turn on Give every character a voice.
- Press play.
How each line finds its voice
- The narrator reads everything outside quotes.
- A quote takes the voice of the character named next to it: said Elizabeth, returned she, replied his wife.
- When no name sits next to it, the line goes to the person the last speaker addressed, or to the other half of a back-and-forth.
- Characters get voices matching their gender, and the ones with the most lines get the clearest voices.
Hear a real scene
Chapter 1 of Pride and Prejudice, with the narrator in Heart's voice, Mrs. Bennet in Emma's and Mr. Bennet in George's, plays on the home page.
Where it stops
- Speakers named only far from their lines can get the wrong voice.
- Plays and scripts written without quotes read in the narrator's voice.
